What is Amazon Alexa?

Alexa is the Amazon virtual assistant. You should not confuse Alexa (the software) with the Echo smart speakers - also developed by the distribution giant - (the hardware). For example, you can have Alexa installed on third-party hardware, such as other speakers or devices.

With devices that have Alexa installed, you can:

  • answer questions
  • play music
  • create lists (for example, shopping lists)
  • Set an alarm or a countdown
  • play podcasts and audiobooks
  • control smart devices – for example, locks if they are compatible with Alexa
  • request information about the weather or traffic

It integrates with a large number of hardware, both from the brand (e.g. Echo) and from third parties, allowing users to listen to music, control videos and photos, receive news or control devices entirely by voice. You just need to invoke the assistant by saying “Alexa”.

The versatility to integrate smart light bulbs, thermostats or locks with Alexa makes it the most complete home automation hub.

How to integrate the Alexa compatible lock?

Just like with other compatible devices (Works with Alexa), connecting your lock to Alexa is very simple. Typically, manufacturers of devices compatible with Amazon's voice assistant have their own platforms (as a user, you can access them through apps on your app store) that allow you to configure the lock for Alexa.

Once you have registered and connected to the manufacturer's cloud for your lock –very similar to other devices like smart bulbs or plugs–, it's time to link it with your Amazon account. Usually, integrating the lock with Amazon Alexa is very simple, you can take a look at how to do it on the Amazon website.
